Sector Standard Project for Coal

Public comment period underway until 30 July

The importance of this Standard

The Standard for coal is one of the first being developed under the Sector Program. This sector has been prioritized based on its widely documented impacts across economic, environmental, and social dimensions, including impacts on climate change, biodiversity, and human rights.

The coal sector is an important provider of raw materials for energy generation and other major industries with far-reaching impacts on the environment, people, and economies. More transparency around these impacts increases accountability and enables informed discussion on the sustainable future of the sector in light of the low-carbon transition.

Public comment period

A public comment period is underway to gather input on the exposure draft for a Sector Standard for Coal. Developed by an independent working group, the objective of the public comment period is to test the clarity, feasibility, completeness, and relevancy of the exposure draft's content, including:

  • Whether the topics identified as likely material for organizations in the coal sector accurately reflect the sector's most significant impacts on the economy, environment, and people
  • That the list of disclosures included for each topic is relevant for organizations in the sector to report information on their impacts

About this project

The exposure draft for Coal has been developed as part of the first project in the GRI Sector Program. The project started in 2019 with the aim to develop a Sector Standard for oil, gas, and coal. In April 2020, the Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB), GRI's independent standard-setting body, decided to divide the Sector Standard Project for Oil Gas and Coal to create two separate Sector Standards.  The development of these standards has followed different timelines. For more information, access the GSSB meeting paper here.

The exposure draft for a Sector Standard: Coal, as developed by the working group, identifies reporting across 22 most critical sustainability topics for organizations with coal activities, covering climate change, the environment, health and safety, employment, communities, and resource governance.

An expert and multi-stakeholder project working group was appointed by the GSSB and is leading the development of the Sector Standard.

The project will follow the GSSB’s  Due Process Protocol, the implementation of which will be overseen by the  Due Process Oversight Committee.
